Palm Jumeirah is a palm-shaped artificial archipelago off the Jumeirah coast of Dubai, developed by Nakheel and built by the Dutch dredging company Van Oord. Construction began in June 2001. The island is divided into the trunk, the fronds and an outer crescent.
The trunk is mixed commercial and residential, the fronds hold villas and the crescent hosts resorts, with hotels including Atlantis The Palm and Atlantis The Royal. Homes range from studio apartments to large villas. A 5.4 km monorail linking Atlantis to the Gateway Towers has run since 2009.
